The Palm Reader's Prophecy
The resort's infinity pool blurred into the horizon, creating that seamless illusion rich people pay extra for. Elena sat on a chaise lounge, nursing her second prosecco, watching Martin smash a padel ball across the court with the kind of focused intensity he hadn't applied to their marriage in years.
His playing partner was Chloe—twenty-six,Marketing,forever dangling on the edge of someone else's husband. Martin laughed at something she said, head tilted back, exposing the throat Elena used to kiss.
"He's going to leave her, you know."
Elena startled. The old woman beside her had appeared silently, skin like weathered parchment, eyes holding the sharp clarity of someone who'd seen too much. "I beg your pardon?"
"Your husband. That girl. He's already halfway out the door."
"You're a palm reader?" Elena asked dryly, though something tightened in her chest.
"I read what's already written." The woman reached out, surprising Elena by taking her hand. Her palm was rough against Elena's softer skin. "You already know. That's why you're sitting here swimming in prosecco instead of joining them."
Martin was high-fiving Chloe now, both glistening with sweat, pressed close in celebration. He hadn't looked at Elena once in three hours.
"What do my palms say?" Elena heard herself ask, hating the desperation in her voice.
"They say you stopped swimming years ago," the woman said quietly. "You've just been treading water, letting the current carry you. But palm lines change—when we choose to grab the wheel."
She released Elena's hand. "My daughter left me for a padel instructor twenty years ago. Best thing that ever happened to me."
Martin was jogging toward them now, Chloe trailing behind. "Elena! You missed the best game—"
"Martin," she said, standing up. "I'm leaving."
"What? But dinner—"
"I'm not coming back to the hotel either. The palm reader's right." She looked at his shocked face, really seeing it for the first time in years. "I've been drowning beside you. Time I learned to swim on my own.".
