The Palm Reader's Last Secret

bearspypalm

Elena pressed her palm against the cold glass of the conference room window, watching the rain blur the city lights below. At 47, she'd learned to recognize the weight of secrets—the way they settled in your chest like stones you had to bear.

Across the table sat Marcus, the new director of operations. Everyone called him a bear of a man—massive shoulders, gruff demeanor, imposing presence. But Elena knew what nobody else did: he was a spy. Not the exciting kind from movies, but the corporate variety, hired to dismantle the company from the inside.

She should've been angry. Instead, she felt something dangerously close to admiration.

"Your palm tells me you're tired," Marcus said, making her jump. He'd moved behind her without a sound. "The lines are deep, even from here."

Elena turned, heart hammering against her ribs. "You read palms now?"

"I read everything. That's why they hired me." He stepped closer, and she caught the scent of whiskey and expensive cologne. "I know you discovered the offshore accounts, Elena. I know you've been documenting them."

"Why tell me this?" Her voice barely rose above a whisper.

"Because I'm tired too." He reached out, took her hand, traced the lines on her palm with surprising gentleness. "This company's been hollow for years. We're both just... bearers of bad news." His thumb pressed against her lifeline. "Sometimes destruction is the only path to something real."

The corporate spy became, in that moment, just a man. The bear of a man became human. And Elena, who'd spent two decades climbing ladders that led nowhere, felt something shift—like tectonic plates beneath her feet.

"What if I help you?" she asked.

Marcus smiled, and for the first time, she saw how tired he really was. "Then maybe we both finally get to rest."

Outside, the rain continued to fall, washing away the city's pretense of order. Elena didn't pull her hand away.
