The Palm Reader's Last Report

Elena's palm hovered over the delete key, trembling. Six years of corporate espionage, reduced to a single flash drive she'd slip into her pocket like so many times before. But this time was different. This time, she'd fallen for the target.

Marcus had shown her the organizational chart on their first date—his finger tracing the pyramid of hierarchy at OmniSystems. "We're all just building someone else's monument," he'd said, that sad smile playing at his lips. Elena had pretended to laugh, but her stomach had tightened. She'd been feeding his R&D secrets to his competitor for three months by then.

Now she sat in his kitchen, watching him cook. Something green caught in his teeth—a piece of spinach from the salad he'd prepared. The mundane detail nearly broke her. She should tell him. Should confess that every intimate moment, every whispered confidence, had been transactional. That she was the worst kind of spy—one who collected hearts along with trade secrets.

"You're quiet," Marcus said, plating the salmon with spinach.

"Just thinking about work." The lie tasted like ash.

He set the plate before her, then covered her hand with his—palm to palm, warm and devastatingly familiar. "Whatever it is, El, we'll figure it out. Together."

The word hung between them. Together. She'd never been with anyone truly. Her whole life was a series of strategic alliances, calculated moves, exits executed before emotional damage could accumulate. Until now.

Elena's fingers closed around the flash drive in her pocket. She could delete the files. Could stay. Could build something real instead of stealing someone else's.

Marcus returned to the counter, and she watched his back—this man who trusted her with his secrets, his research, his heart. The spinach was still stuck between his teeth. A tiny imperfection, absurd and human.

She pulled the drive from her pocket and placed it on the table. A choice, finally uncalculated. Finally real.
