The Palm Reader's Last Lie

Mara traced the life line on Elias's palm, her thumb pressing into the warm skin of his hand. The hotel bar was nearly empty at 2 AM, just the hum of refrigeration and the distant laughter of drunks on the street below.

"You're going to meet someone," she said, not meeting his eyes. "Someone who changes everything."

Elias laughed, a bitter sound that tasted of whiskey and cigarettes. "I already did. Turns out she was sleeping with my competitor while accessing my client files from my home office."

Mara's hand stilled. She wasn't a psychic. She was a corporate spy hired by Elias's company to test their security protocols, but somewhere between the stolen glances across conference rooms and the night they'd both worked late pretending to analyze data breaches, the job had blurred. Elias's wife—the woman he'd left three months ago—had been Mara's target all along.

Now Elias was offering her the one thing she'd never calculated: the truth. He knew. He'd probably known for weeks.

"You're clever," he said, covering her hand with his. "Like a fox that's been hunted so long it forgets it has teeth."

Mara pulled away. The agency would kill the contract by morning. Elias would be reassigned, his security clearance reviewed. She'd be ghosted into another identity, another city, another life of reading palms and stealing secrets in the hollow spaces between business trips and broken marriages.

"I could come with you," Elias said quietly.

The offer hung between them, dangerous and impossible. In their world, trust was just another exploit waiting to be discovered. But for a moment, in the sterile light of a hotel bar where business deals went to die, Mara wanted to believe in the fiction they'd created.

She stood up, leaving money on the counter. "You'll meet someone," she repeated. "But it won't be me."

Outside, the city hummed with a million secrets, and somewhere in the distance, a phone began to ring.
