The Palm Reader's iPhone
Maya's fingers hovered over her iPhone screen, 12% battery glowing like a warning light. At Jordan's house party, the social pyramid was visible even in the dim lighting—varsity cheerleaders at the kitchen island, theater kids near the speakers, everyone else scattered in descending orbits of coolness. Maya usually orbited somewhere in the middle, but tonight she'd positioned herself strategically close to the apex.
Then her phone died. Black screen. No signal, no power, no social safety net.
"You need this more than I do."
Maya looked up. Zach, senior varsity runner and current king of the social pyramid, held out a charging cable. His smile was genuine, not performative.
"I—what?"
"Your face when your phone died? Same thing happened to me last week at Chloe's party. I had to, like, actually talk to people. It was tragic." He winked. "I always keep an extra cable in my pocket now. My older sister's idea—she says it's the ultimate party foul to be stranded without your phone."
Maya plugged in her phone, then did something bold. "I'm Maya."
"Zach. Obviously." He sat beside her on the couch. "So, what's your deal? Besides nearly hyperventilating over battery percentage?"
"Track team. And I write for the school paper."
"No way. That piece you did on cafeteria food last month? Me and my friends were literally dying. You nailed the 'mystery meat' investigation."
Warmth spread through her chest. He'd read her work.
The party swirled around them—some juniors doing TikTok dances, someone's dad yelling about the noise, the infinite cycle of iPhone cameras documenting everything. Zach and Maya kept talking. About his running injuries, her journalism dreams, the pressure to be perfect, the exhaustion of constantly performing.
Then Chloe appeared, queen bee descending from her pyramid throne. "Zach, we're doing palm readings out back. Mystic Mike is actually insane with his predictions. You coming?"
Maya's stomach dropped. Chloe's gaze slid over her like she was furniture.
Zach stood up. Then paused. "You coming, Maya?"
Chloe's brow furrowed. "Um—"
"Maya's cool. Plus, she writes for the paper. Maybe she can interview Mike about his, like, success rate with predictions."
Chloe's expression shifted. Recognition. "Oh, you're the food columnist? That article was fire." She turned to Maya. "Seriously, you have to come. Mike's supposed to be crazy accurate."
As they walked toward the backyard, Maya's phone buzzed—a text from Zach. Already.
Saved by a charging cable. Also, you're way more interesting than anyone at the top of the pyramid. Just saying.
Maya smiled, typing back: Next time my phone dies, I'll know it's fate.
Outside, under string lights and stars, they sat in a circle around Mystic Mike. When he held Maya's palm, studying the lines like they were ancient maps, she didn't care what he predicted. She was already rewriting her own future.
