The Palm Reader's Dare
Summer in the suburbs meant pool parties and fake confidence. I leaned against the rough bark of the palm tree in Megan's backyard, nursing a flat orange soda while watching the swimming pool shimmer like something out of a TikTok filter I could never afford.
"You're literally shaking," said Jake, my best friend since kindergarten, appearing with two fresh sodas. "Just talk to her already."
"I can't. She's with the popular crowd. Plus, I think Tyler's being a total bull about it."
Tyler—star of the swim team, owner of the perfect jawline, currently showing off his cannonballs. The guy had swagger, or at least the convincing kind.
"Bro, you're overthinking," Jake said. "Hey, look at your hand." He grabbed my palm and traced the lines with his finger. "Palm reader told my sister this line means you're gonna do something brave tonight."
"That's not how that works."
"No cap, she charges fifty bucks per session and she's literally never wrong. Last year she told our cousin he'd meet someone at a beach party, and now he's been dating Maya for eight months."
My heart did that embarrassing flutter thing. "So you think—"
"I think you need to stop lurking behind this palm tree like a creep and go say hi."
But before I could psych myself up, Tyler finished his latest splash and headed straight for us. Water dripped from his hair onto his shoulders. For a split second, I prepared for the worst—the mocking, the public humiliation.
"Hey," Tyler said, sounding weirdly nervous. "You're in my AP Bio class, right? The one who always knows the answers to Mr. Harrison's impossible questions?"
I blinked. "Yeah, that's me."
"Could you maybe help me with the extra credit assignment? I'm totally lost, and everyone says you're the person to ask."
Behind him, Megan—the girl I'd been crushing on for three months—gave me a thumbs-up.
Jake smirked into his orange soda. "Told you. Palm reader, man."
Sometimes the scariest moments are the ones that surprise you in the best way.
