The Palm of Dreaming Oranges

Lila discovered the magical tree on the Tuesday she turned seven. Behind her grandmother's garden, where ordinary coconuts grew, stood a single palm tree with leaves like emerald raindrops. But what made it special wasn't its height or its graceful sway in the island breeze – it was the oranges.

These oranges glowed softly, like tiny suns caught in branches. When Lila climbed the palm's rough trunk (which smelled like cinnamon and old stories), she found the lowest orange within reach. It pulsed with warmth, as if it held a heartbeat.

"You've found me," whispered the orange, surprising Lila so much she nearly fell. "I've been waiting for someone special."

The orange explained that it wasn't really an orange at all, but a vessel for something magical – vitamin of pure imagination. Each glowing orange contained enough creativity to make anything possible for one whole day.

"But you must promise," the orange continued, "to use this vitamin to help others, not just yourself. Magic shared grows stronger. Magic hoarded fades away."

Lila nodded solemnly, understanding more than she could say.

That day, she used the vitamin's power to help her friend Mei, who was sad about moving away. Lila made Mei's stuffed animals come alive for one perfect afternoon of dancing and tea parties. She helped her grandfather remember forgotten songs from his childhood. She even made the island's lonely lighthouse keeper smile by creating glowing dolphins that danced in his window.

By sunset, the vitamin's power faded, but Lila's heart felt fuller than ever.

The next morning, all the magical oranges were gone – but the palm had sprouted a single new orange, glowing brighter than all the others combined.

"You passed the test," whispered the new orange. "You used imagination not for yourself, but for joy. Now you'll never need my magic again – you've learned to make your own."

Lila climbed down and ran to help Mei pack, already planning the stories they'd tell together. Some magic, she realized, comes in glowing oranges. But the best magic grows inside you, fed by kindness and friendship, and stays forever.
