The Padel Scheme

Chloe's master plan to climb the freshman social pyramid began with padel lessons. Her older sister Jade had declared it "literally the sport of the season," which meant if Chloe wanted any chance of sitting at the seniors' table during lunch, she needed to master it immediately.

The problem? Chloe had zero hand-eye coordination and less than zero game awareness. But determination was her superpower.

"You've got this, girl," said Maya, her best friend and personal hype woman. "Even if you're totally cooked on the court, at least you'll look cute doing it."

The plan was flawless: infiltrate the exclusive Friday night padel sessions at the country club, impress the popular crowd with her supposedly natural talent, and secure an invitation to Sierra's legendary birthday bash. Nothing could go wrong.

Except everything.

The first Friday, Chloe spent more time running after balls than actually hitting them. Her racquet felt like a foreign object, and the court might as well have been a frozen lake for all the traction she had. By the third session, the seniors had started calling her "Crash," which was definitely not the vibe she was going for.

Then came the incident with the fox.

It was dusk, and Chloe was practicing her serve alone because Maya had bailed to study for bio. She'd finally hit a rhythm when something orange and sleek darted onto the court, snatching the ball and vanishing into the bushes.

"No, no, NO!" Chloe shrieked, giving chase. The fox led her on a wild goose—well, fox—chase through the manicured grounds, around the tennis pro's shack, and straight into the outdoor dining area where the senior girls were having dinner.

Chloe skidded to a halt, breathless and sweaty, with the entire popular crowd staring at her. Including Sierra.

"Did you just... chase a fox?" Sierra asked, her perfectly glossed lips slightly open.

"It stole my ball," Chloe managed, before bursting into embarrassed laughter. "I know, I'm literally unhinged."

But then—the impossible happened. Sierra cracked up. Soon the whole table was laughing, and somehow Chloe found herself being ushered into an empty seat, handed a sparkling water, and grilled about her "adventurous spirit" and "fearless energy."

Her padel game remained tragic. Her social game, however, had just leveled up in ways her pyramid scheme never could've predicted.

Sometimes the best plans are the ones that crash and burn spectacularly—straight into something better.
