The Padel Scheme

Mara smoothed her hair in the rearview mirror, noting the silver threads that had multiplied since the merger. Another corporate acquisition, another pyramid to climb. The water bottle in her cupholder had warmed in the sun, much like her enthusiasm for this networking event.

"You coming?" Sarah called from the padel court. Sarah, who had once been her friend before becoming her competitor for the VP position.

Mara stepped onto the court, the racket handle slick with sweat. The ball cracked against the glass wall—a satisfying violence. They played in silence, the rhythm of their movement betraying years of shared history.

"I heard about the reorg," Sarah said between points.

Mara didn't break her stride. "Rumors."

"They're eliminating layers. Flattening the pyramid."

The ball hit the net. Mara walked to retrieve it, her reflection staring back from the glass wall—tired eyes, the hair she'd stopped coloring six months ago, the realization that she'd spent fifteen years building someone else's dream.

"I turned down the promotion," Mara said.

Sarah stopped. "What?"

"I'm leaving. Starting my own consultancy. The water's fine out here, actually."

The silence stretched between them, heavy with things unsaid. Sarah's racket lowered slowly.

"I could come with you," Sarah said quietly.

Mara smiled, really smiled, for the first time in months. "Play for it?"

"Loser buys the first round of drinks."

"And pays for the padel court."

"Deal."

The ball sailed high, and for the first time, Mara wasn't thinking about the next rung.
