The Padel Pyramid

runningiphonepadelfriendpyramid

My thumb was literally sore from **running** it up and down my **iPhone** screen, refreshing Insta for the third time in five minutes. My stomach was doing full gymnastics.

"Maya! You good or what?" Jordan asked from courtside.

"Yeah, just... pre-game nerves," I lied, adjusting my grip on my **padel** racket. The neon green ball thudded against my practice wall—thwack, thwack, thwack.

Today's match wasn't just about winning. It was about proving I deserved to be in Skylar's squad. The girl had literally constructed a **pyramid** of popularity at our school—herself at the top, her inner circle of three in the middle, and the rest of us scrambling at the bottom, hoping not to get crushed beneath the weight of her opinion.

I'd been trying to level up for weeks. Perfect attendance at her lunch table. Comments on every post. Wearing the right brand of hoodie. I was exhausted.

"She's just one person," Jordan said, handing me a water bottle. His dark curls dripped with sweat. "Why does her approval mean everything?"

"Because you don't get it," I snapped, then immediately regretted it. Jordan was the only genuine **friend** I had left since starting high school. Everyone else felt like they were playing 4D chess with my social standing.

The whistle blew. Skylar walked onto the opposing court, her perfect ponytail swinging like it was choreographed. She caught my eye and gave me that smile—the one that never quite reached her eyes.

Game on.

First point: Skylar's serve slammed into my corner. I returned it weakly. She laughed—that cold, sharp laugh that made me feel about two inches tall.

But then something snapped. Maybe it was Jordan's voice in my head. Maybe it was the way Skylar's minions sat in the stands, phones out, filming my humiliation like it was content for their feeds.

I stopped playing nice.

My forehand sent the ball screaming past her ear. The gasp from the crowd was literally music to my ears. Skylar's face fell—just for a second, but I caught it. That perfect pyramid had a crack.

We went back and forth, point after sweating point. I wasn't playing for approval anymore. I was playing for myself.

Final point. Match point. The ball hung in the air like opportunity. I leaped—actually LEAPT—and smashed it down Skylar's line. She couldn't react fast enough. The ball bounced twice before she even moved.

Silence. Then Jordan's whoop from the sidelines.

"WHAT WAS THAT?!" he shouted, charging onto the court to give me a high-five that literally made my hand sting. "Maya just ended Skylar's whole career!"

Skylar stood there, mouth open, face flushing red. Her pyramid wasn't looking so solid anymore.

I pulled out my iPhone. Four notifications. Three from group chats I wasn't part of. One from Jordan.

"That was insane," his text read. "Wanna get boba after?"

I didn't even look at Skylar's squad. Didn't care about their pyramid or their approval or whatever toxic game they'd been playing all semester.

"Yeah," I texted Jordan back, grinning so hard my face hurt. "Let's bounce."

Some hierarchies are meant to be smashed. And I'd just brought down the whole thing with a neon green ball and a well-timed swing.
