The Padel Pyramid

My hair was doing that thing again—standing up like I'd stuck my finger in an electrical socket. So obviously, I yanked my dad's old fedora off the coat rack. The hat smelled like mothballs and questionable choices, but desperate times called for desperate accessories.

"You look like a substitute teacher from 2004," Maya said, not looking up from her phone. We were sitting on my bed, surrounded by homework I was definitely avoiding.

"It's called vintage," I lied. "Besides, I need to look confident. Jordan invited me to play padel with them tomorrow."

Maya finally looked up. "Jordan? The Jordan? As in, the one who's basically at the top of the freshman social pyramid?"

"The very same." I flopped onto my back. "And I don't even know what padel IS. Is it like tennis? Do I need my own racquet? Am I gonna embarrass myself so hard I have to transfer schools?"

My phone chimed—low battery warning. Perfect timing. I scrambled to find my charging cable, tangling myself in the sheets in the process. That's when Buster chose that exact moment to zoom into my room like a furry maniac, sliding across the hardwood and crashing directly into my nightstand.

My water bottle tipped over. Soaking my backpack. Soaking my homework.

"BUSTER!" I shouted, but my dog was already gone, thundering down the hallway like he'd just committed the crime of the century.

Maya was laughing so hard she fell off my bed. "This is fine. Everything is fine. You're going to meet your crush wearing a grandpa hat, with zero knowledge of padel, and now your homework is dripping wet. Ten out of ten, no notes."

I stared at the ceiling. "I'm doomed."

"Or," Maya said, sitting up and wiping tears from her eyes, "you could just... be yourself? Jordan invited you, remember? They already like you."

I thought about that. The hat was still perched on my head, crooked now. It wasn't me. None of this was.

So I did something scary. I took off the hat. I texted Jordan: "Hey, I've never played padel before lol. Are you cool with teaching me?"

Three dots bounced immediately. "OMG yes, I was hoping you'd say that! I'm terrible too, we can suck together 😂"

My stomach did that fluttery thing. The good kind.

"See?" Maya grinned. "Being lame works."

"Shut up." I threw a pillow at her.

Buster chose that moment to trot back in, carrying my charging cable like a prize. My dog, my best friend, and a text from a cute person who wanted to be terrible at sports with me.

Sometimes the pyramid isn't something you climb alone. Sometimes you find people happy to meet you somewhere in the middle.

"Alright," I said, grabbing my phone from Buster. "Let's watch some padel tutorials. I refuse to go down without a fight."
