The Padel Pyramid

Jordan's baseball coach always said the sport was 90% mental, but nothing prepared him for the pyramid-shaped glass courts looming over the community center parking lot.

"Dude, you've got this," Marcus said, tossing him a padel racket. "It's basically tennis but shorter."

Jordan caught it awkwardly. His cleats still smelled like dugout dirt from practice that morning. He'd spent fourteen years perfecting his baseball swing, but here he was, trying something new because his best friend refused to take no for an answer.

"My arms are dead from batting practice," Jordan groaned.

"That's the bear talking," Marcus grinned. "Your brain's just scared of looking stupid."

Their inside joke — calling each other 'bear' when one of them was being stubborn — usually made Jordan laugh. Not today.

The court felt like a glass pyramid of embarrassment. Marcus served smoothly. Jordan swung and missed completely, the ball smacking against the back wall like a cosmic joke.

"Still got that baseball swing," Marcus called out. "Padel's more about control, bro."

An hour later, Jordan was sweating through his jersey but actually rallying. The glass walls created this weird echo chamber where every hit sounded amplified, like the universe was either laughing or cheering.

"Not terrible," Marcus admitted when they flopped onto the bench afterward. "For a baseball player."

Jordan stared at the pyramid courts catching the last orange light of summer. "Next Tuesday?"

Marcus's eyebrows shot up. "You're down?"

"Yeah." Jordan grinned. "But you're buying Gatorade."

"Deal."

Walking home, Jordan realized something had shifted — not just between sports, but between them. Some first hits were supposed to be strikeouts, and that was the whole point. The bear in his head had finally shut up.
