The Padel Protocol
Maya stared at the group chat notification, her thumb hovering over the screen. Pademia wants you to play padel after school 🎾
Her? Maya who tripped over her own feet in gym class? Maya whose social ranking hovered somewhere near the bottom of the freshman pyramid?
She'd been sitting near Pademia and her squad at lunch for two weeks now, close enough to overhear their conversations about weekend plans and secret parties. Close enough that Pademia had finally noticed her existence.
"Sure!" Maya typed back, adding three exclamation points because that felt like something someone confident would do.
After school, she arrived at the padel courts wearing her older sister's old tennis outfit—slightly too big, but it would have to do. Pademia waved her over, looking effortless in a matching outfit that probably cost more than Maya's entire wardrobe.
"Hey!" Pademia called. "This is gonna be so fun. We need a fourth for our tournament next week."
The game was chaos. Maya missed every ball, her racket swinging at empty air while Pademia's friends snickered. But Pademia kept encouraging her, and somehow—miraculously—Maya's clumsy swing connected with a ball on match point. It sailed over the net, landing perfectly in the corner.
"OMG Maya!" Pademia screamed, running over to high-five her. "You're actually secretly good!"
That's when her backpack, sitting courtside, tipped over. A tangled mess of cables spilled out—ethernet, HDMI, charging cords, all knotted together like a digital snake pit. She'd been helping set up for the school talent show during lunch and forgotten to repack.
The group went quiet.
"What is all that?" one of the girls asked.
Maya felt her face burn. "I help with tech club. Sound equipment, streaming setup..."
Pademia's eyes lit up. "Wait, you can FIX cables? Our whole streaming setup for the tournament is broken. The IT guy said he can't come until next week."
"I can totally fix it," Maya said, surprising herself.
She spent the next hour untangling and reconnecting their system while Pademia watched, impressed. They ended up sitting on the floor afterward, sharing Pademia's snacks and actually talking—like, really talking. About how stressful it was being at the top of the social pyramid. About how Pademia missed just being able to geek out about stuff without everyone watching.
"You know," Pademia said, "I was scared to invite you today. I thought you were too cool for us."
"Me? Cool?" Maya laughed. "I thought YOU were gonna realize I'm a fraud."
"We're all frauds, Maya," Pademia grinned. "That's kinda the point."
Walking home, Maya's phone buzzed. New group chat: Padel + Tech Squad 🎾🔧
Pademia: same time next week?
Maya smiled, typing back: wouldn't miss it.
