The Padel Protocol
Elena caught herself in the reflection of the floor-to-ceiling windows—thirty-eight, successful, and utterly exhausted. Behind her, the Madrid skyline burned orange with sunset, but all she saw was the empty padel court below.
"You're becoming obsessed," Marcus had said that morning, adjusting his cufflinks with that maddening calm. "It's just a merger."
Just a merger. Just the culmination of five years of work. Just the reason she'd barely touched him in months.
The audit had revealed impossible things. Competitor bids matching theirs to the decimal. Strategies leaked before Monday meetings. Someone on the inside. A spy.
Now she watched from the thirty-fourth floor as Marcus played padel with HER assistant, Sophie. Their movements through the glass were synchronized—predatory, graceful. Like foxes working a hunt.
Her phone buzzed. An anonymous message: *Check the cloud storage. Shared folder named 'Bull'.*
Elena's fingers trembled as she navigated to the file. There it was—months of correspondence. Not corporate espionage. Something infinitely worse.
Marcus and Sophie. The messages started innocent enough. *Padel tomorrow?* *God, you played like a bull today.* *She suspects nothing.*
She read on, compelled by horror. They'd plotted this merger timeline around Elena's schedule. Used her trust to clear their path. The friend she'd mentored, the man she'd built a life with—both playing their own game while she'd been busy conquering the corporate world.
The elevator chimed.
Elena minimized the window, composed her face. Marcus entered, sweat-stained and glowing, Sophie trailing behind him with hungry eyes.
"Good match?" Elena asked, voice steady.
"Always." Marcus kissed her cheek—fleeting, perfunctory. "We should join us next time. Sophie says you never play anymore."
Elena looked between them. The fox and the bull. The friend and the lover.
"Maybe," she said, already planning her exit strategy. "Maybe next time."
They left together, unaware that in business, as in padel, the game isn't over until the final point is played. And Elena always won.
