The Padel Pool Catastrophe

Maya's summer wasn't supposed to start with her standing at the country club pool in a tankini two sizes too small, watching the popular kids dominate the **padel** court like they owned everything. Which they basically did.

"You coming in or what?" her cousin Chloe called from the water, already surrounded by friends who seemed to radiate the kind of confidence Maya had been chasing since middle school.

"Yeah! Just... fixing my **hair**," Maya lied, running her fingers through the stubborn frizz that had taken over since that ill-advised DIY bleach job. Her mom's comment this morning—"It'll grow out"—wasn't exactly the glow-up motivation she'd needed.

That's when she saw THE GUY. Ethan. He was leaning against the clubhouse, messing with something that looked like a **cable** from the outdoor speakers they kept promising to fix. His eyes met hers across the pool area, and Maya immediately regretted everything—her hair, her existence, the fact that she was still standing there like a total NPC while everyone else was living their best lives.

Then chaos struck. Someone's orange tabby **cat**—the club's unofficial mascot—streaked past, chased by a screaming toddler. The cat scrambled up the nearby fence RIGHT onto the electrical box Ethan was working on.

"NO!" Ethan shouted, grabbing for the cat while simultaneously trying to protect the equipment.

The cat leaped. Ethan grabbed. The **cable** snapped.

Sparks flew (literally). The outdoor speakers cut out mid-song. Ethan stood there holding a confused cat while his hair stood up from static electricity. The entire pool area went silent.

Then someone started laughing. Then everyone was laughing, including Ethan, who was currently being headbutted by the rescue cat while still managing to look unfairly attractive.

Maya found herself cracking up too, and for the first time all summer, she actually walked toward the crowd instead of away from it.

"Good save," she told Ethan, gesturing to the cat now draped over his shoulder like a fur stole.

"Thanks," he grinned, and Maya's stomach did that thing where it forgot how to be a normal organ. "I'm Ethan, by the way. And this menace is Barnaby."

"Maya." She pushed her frizzy hair back. "And honestly? Your hair looks way better with the static thing. It's a vibe."

Ethan laughed, and Maya decided maybe this summer wasn't going to be a total disaster after all.
