The Padel Panic

Maya's hair wasn't cooperating. Again. She'd spent forty-five minutes perfecting those beach waves she'd seen on TikTok, but humidity had other plans. Her reflection stared back—frizz halo, questionable outfit choice, zero confidence.

"You good, Maya?" her mom called from downstairs.

"Fine!" Maya lied, grabbing her iPhone off the bed. The notification light blinked—three unread messages from *Him*. Tyler, the boy who'd somehow become her entire personality since seventh period English.

But when she unlocked her phone, her thumb slipped. Instead of replying to his "hey, wanna hang?", she sent a voice memo she'd recorded earlier—her practicing her response to his potential ask to the spring fling. The one where she sounded like a desperate motivational speaker. "You got this, Maya! Radiate confidence! Manifest that romance!"

**Sent.**

Maya buried her face in her pillow. This was it. The social equivalent of death. Meanwhile, Buster, her ancient golden retriever, nudged her hand with his wet snout, completely unsympathetic to her teenage tragedy.

"Great," she muttered. "Even the dog thinks I'm pathetic."

Her phone buzzed again. Not Tyler. Her best friend Chen: "Emergency. Padel courts behind school. NOW."

The new padel courts had become the social hub ever since that TikTok trend made racquet sports cool again. Maya grabbed her jacket, still in crisis mode.

She found Chen standing near the courts, arms crossed, watching a scene unfold. There was Tyler, playing padel with *her*—Brittany, the embodiment of everything Maya wasn't: effortlessly cool, perfect hair always defying physics, and currently laughing at something Tyler had said.

"He asked her to the fling," Chen said quietly. "Like, five minutes ago."

Maya's stomach dropped. But then she noticed something else—Brittany's phone was on the bench nearby, screen visible. A notification: *Did you see what Maya sent by accident? OMG.*

Brittany wasn't laughing with Tyler. She was laughing *at* Maya.

Something shifted. Maya didn't march over there with some dramatic confrontation. Instead, she grabbed a spare racquet from the bench, walked onto the court, and interrupted their game.

"Hey," she said, voice steadier than she felt. "Wanna play doubles?"

Tyler looked surprised. Brittany looked annoyed. But Maya? For the first time all day, Maya felt like herself—not the version trying to impress anyone, not the version with perfect waves or rehearsed responses. Just Maya, slightly sweaty hair, heart pounding, taking the bull by the horns.

"Sure," Tyler said, grinning. "But warning—I'm terrible."

"Me too," Maya smiled. "Perfect."
