The Padel Game Under the Palms
Maya followed her ginger cat Mango through the jungle, past towering palm trees that swished in the warm breeze. They'd found a secret path before, but today something magical sparkled in the air.
The path opened onto a hidden court—four walls painted sunset colors, a perfect padel court glowing in dappled sunlight. But that wasn't the strangest thing.
A zombie shambled there. Not the scary kind from stories, but a friendly-looking creature with mossy green skin and a crooked smile, bouncing a ball against the wall with a clumsy wooden paddle.
"Want to play?" he called, his voice like rustling leaves.
Mango the cat purred and rubbed against the zombie's mossy knee. Maya realized this wasn't a monster at all—just someone lonely who needed a friend.
"I'm Zim," the zombie said shyly. "I've been waiting for someone to play padel with me for a very long time."
Maya grinned. She LOVED padel!
They played for hours under the palm trees. Zim wasn't very good, but he laughed every time he missed, and Mango chased the ball when it rolled away.
When they took a break, Zim reached into the pocket of his tattered jacket. "I saved these," he said, pulling out two bright orange papayas. "Sweetest fruit in the jungle."
They sat in the shade of the palms, sharing papaya as the sun began to set. Maya learned Zim was a guardian spirit who protected the jungle's magic—but he'd gotten lonely because everyone was too scared to stay.
"They don't know I just want to play," he said quietly.
Maya squeezed his mossy hand. "They will now. Because I'm coming back every day."
The zombie smiled, and for the first time in centuries, he didn't feel alone.
Some things aren't what they seem at first glance. Sometimes the scariest-looking creatures just need someone brave enough to say hello—and maybe share some papaya and a game of padel.
Under the palm trees, magic isn't spells or potions. Magic is friendship.
