The Padel Fox Summer

The orange sunset burned across the sky as I stood outside the padel court, heart hammering like I'd just chugged three espressos. Three weeks into summer, and I still didn't know how I'd landed here—in the exclusive summer league where somehow everyone else already knew each other.

"You coming, fox?" Jenna called from the court. She'd started calling me that last week after I made some "crazy" save during drills. The nickname stuck, and honestly? I didn't hate it. Made me feel like I actually belonged.

I adjusted my grip on the padel racket. My palms were sweating. Again.

The game started. My partner Marcus kept shouting instructions like "BOOM!" and "SEND IT!" every time he hit the ball, which was both terrifying and weirdly helpful. Jenna and her sister Maya were crushing us—until I noticed something. Maya always served to the same corner. Always.

"Fox mode activated," I muttered, darting to the left just as the ball came flying. Perfect return. Jenna's jaw actually dropped.

"Since when do you have moves like that?" she asked afterward as we all migrated to the pool area, dripping sweat and laughing.

"Started practicing at 6 AM," I lied smoothly, accepting a genuinely nasty orange sports drink from Marcus. The pool glittered behind us, and someone had started playing music from a portable speaker.

Jenna sat beside me on the lounge chairs, our knees brushing. "You know," she said, staring at the water, "we thought you'd be weird when you joined. But you're actually kinda cool."

I took a long sip of my drink to hide my smile. "Yeah? Well, you foxes aren't so bad yourselves."

She laughed, and the moment felt like everything—like this summer might actually be the start of something real.
