The Padel Court Spy Mission
Maya's phone buzzed with another Snapchat notification. Kai was at the country club again, posting stories from the padel court. She'd been lurking on his profile for twenty minutes, basically social media stalking like a total creep.
"You're doing it again," said Jordan, flopping onto her bed and interrupting her spy session. "Just talk to him already."
"I can't just slide into his DMs like 'hey, noticed you're undefeated at padel this summer,'" Maya groaled, hiding her face in a pillow. Jordan's cat, Mochi, gave her a judgmental stare from the windowsill.
Maya's abuela had forced her into that ridiculous bear costume for the quinceañera fundraiser last month. Kai had been there too, wearing a papaya-print shirt that should've been ugly but somehow looked perfect on him. He'd high-fived bear-Maya and laughed at her terrible dance moves.
"He's at the court again," Maya said, suddenly energized. "We're going. You're driving."
"To watch teenagers play padel? Absolutely not." But five minutes later, they were in Jordan's beat-up Honda.
The country club parking lot was packed. Through the fence, Maya spotted Kai immediately—tall, easy smile, destroyed at padel but having the time of his life. His opponent was crushing him.
"So, what's the plan?" Jordan asked. "Sneak onto the court? Challenge him to a match?"
Maya opened her mouth, then shut it. The truth was, she didn't have a plan. She'd been so focused on observing from afar that she hadn't thought about what came next.
Kai noticed them. His face lit up, and he waved. "Hey! Bear girl!"
"Bear girl?" Jordan raised an eyebrow.
"Long story."
Kai jogged over, wiping sweat from his forehead. "You gonna join or just lurk? We need another player."
Maya's heart hammered. "I've never played."
"Perfect." Kai grinned, tossing her a racket. "I'll teach you. Fair warning though—I'm terrible."
Her hands were shaking as she stepped onto the court. But as Kai patiently explained the rules, laughing at his own messed-up demonstrations, Maya felt something shift. She wasn't watching from the outside anymore.
Later, as they sat on the bench sharing papaya smoothies from the clubhouse, Kai said, "You know, at the quinceañera, I was trying to work up the courage to ask you to dance. But the bear costume was pretty intimidating."
Maya laughed. "Mission accomplished then."
