The Padel Court Spy

Maya's heart raced as she crouched behind the chain-link fence, peering through the metal diamonds like some amateur detective. For three weeks, she'd been playing spy, watching Jordan practice padel every Tuesday and Thursday.

Jordan with his perfect hair and easy laugh. Jordan who'd smiled at her in algebra three months ago and never looked away, not that Maya counted.

The sudden sensation of being watched crept over her. She spun around, scanning the area nervously. No one in sight. Just the rhythmic thwack of padel balls against walls and her own paranoid thoughts.

"Nice stalking technique," a voice cut through her anxiety.

Maya jumped, nearly dropping her phone. Jordan stood there, padel racket casually resting against his shoulder, sweat glistening on his forehead. A smirk played across his face.

Heat rushed through her cheeks. "I wasn't—I was just—" The words tumbled out in a desperate jumble.

"Spying?" he teased, his grin widening. "Because I've seen you hiding behind that fence for weeks now."

Maya's mind raced. She couldn't believe he'd noticed. All this time, she thought she'd been so careful. "I was just admiring your technique," she managed, attempting to sound casual and failing spectacularly.

Jordan stepped closer, his expression softening. "You play?"

"I—" Her response caught in her throat.

"My partner bailed on me today." He rotated the racket in his hand, studying her intently. "Want to hit some?"

For weeks, Maya had been running away from this moment, from the terrifying possibility of actually talking to him. Running from potential rejection, from looking foolish. But Jordan's eyes held something unexpected—anticipation.

Her heart thudded against her ribs as she made a split-second decision. No more retreating. "Sure," she said, her voice steadying with newfound resolve. "But fair warning—I'm terrible."

"You couldn't possibly be worse than my last partner," he laughed, already moving toward the court entrance. "And the spy thing? Kind of endearing."

As Maya stepped onto the padel court, racket in hand, she understood: sometimes the best moments come when you stop running and start playing.
