The Padel Court Protocol

Maya's summer took a turn when her parents enrolled her in padel lessons at the country club. She stood court-side, neon racquet in hand, heart hammering like she'd been caught red-handed doing something she shouldn't.

"You good, Maya?" Kai asked, sliding beside her. He was her dog—her ride-or-die since sixth grade, even if he'd gotten annoyingly hot over winter break.

"Fine," Maya lied, watching Ethan across the court. "Just mentally preparing."

"Mentally preparing to spy on Ethan some more?" Kai raised an eyebrow. "Because that's been working SO well."

Maya shoved him. "Shut up. I'm not spying. I'm... observing. From a distance. respectfully."

"That's literally what spying is, bestie."

The whistle blew. Maya's opponent wasn't just some random girl—it was Madison, Ethan's ex. The girl who'd made Maya's life miserable freshman year. The absolute bull who'd started rumors about Maya's crush after reading her exposed texts.

Game on.

First point: Madison smashed the ball so hard it nearly took Maya's head off.

Second point: Maya fumbled, water bottle flying everywhere.

Third point: Something shifted. Maya stopped thinking about Ethan, started channeling every insecurity Madison had ever inflicted. Her arms moved on instinct, years of tennis muscle memory taking over. Smash. Volley. Drop shot. Game.

"You got weirdly good," Madison admitted afterward, breathless. "No joke."

"Thanks," Maya said, surprised to mean it. "You too."

By the fountain later, Kai found her grinning.

"What's that smile?" He hip-bumped her. "That's the 'I just survived my bully and it felt iconic' smile."

"Maybe." Maya drank, water cool against her flushed skin. "Or maybe I just realized I don't need to spy on Ethan to feel interesting anymore."

Kai's eyes widened. "Wait. FOR REAL?"

"For real. I'm over it."

"About damn time." He opened his arms. "Now come here, bestie. I witnessed your glow-up and I'm emotional."

Maya laughed, hugging her friend as the sun set over the padel courts. Some crushes faded, but some things—like loyalty, and finding your own fire—only got stronger.
