The Padel Court Prophecy

Maya watched from behind the chain-link fence, clutching her phone like it was a lifeline. Inside the padel court, Josh and his effortlessly cool friends moved with the kind of easy confidence Maya had been trying to fake since seventh grade.

"You coming or what?" Josh called, waving his racquet.

Her heart did that stupid flutter thing. Last week, she'd overheard him talking about Egypt's pyramids in history class, actually paying attention for once. Now here he was, inviting her into the inner sanctum of high school popularity.

But then Luna—her ancient, arthritic golden retriever—saw a squirrel and decided that was her moment to shine.

The leash slipped through Maya's fingers like water. Luna bolted, dragging Maya's backpack behind her like a rebel flag. The dog charged straight through the gate, barking at the squirrel perched innocently on the padel court fence.

Everyone stopped. The ball dropped. Racquets froze.

Maya sprinted after Luna, face burning hotter than the summer sun. This was it. The social pyramid had just collapsed on top of her, and she hadn't even made it to the first tier.

Luna cornered the squirrel against the back wall, tail wagging like she'd just won the lottery.

"Dude," Josh said, staring. "Your dog is... legendary."

Maya grabbed Luna's collar, ready to apologize her way into oblivion.

"Seriously," Josh continued, grinning. "That was the most exciting thing that's happened all practice. You wanna hit some balls?"

Maya looked at Luna, now calmly sniffing Josh's sneakers like she owned the place. The pyramid suddenly looked different—not like a ladder to climb, but like a structure that could be rebuilt, brick by brick, with the right people.

"Sure," Maya said. "But I'm warning you. Luna's my co-pilot."
