The Padel Court Promise

Maya stared at the text message from Kayla, the girl she'd been trying to impress since seventh grade. "Padel tomorrow at 4. Be there or be square."

Padel. The sport that everyone rich played at the country club. Maya's family wasn't exactly struggling, but they definitely weren't country club people either. Still, this was her chance.

"You got this, Maya," her older brother Marcus called from the couch, barely looking up from his phone. "Just don't embarrass yourself like you did with that soccer camp last summer."

"Shut up," Maya grumbled, downing her third glass of water. Her hands were shaking.

The next day, Maya showed up at the courts wearing her cousin's old tennis outfit, feeling like an imposter. Kayla was already there, along with her squad—Brandon, Chloe, and Tyler. They all had matching padel rackets and coordinated outfits.

"Hey! Glad you made it!" Kayla's smile was genuine, which surprised Maya. "We're playing teams. You and Brandon versus me and Tyler."

Brandon was captain of the debate team and had hair that somehow always looked perfect. Maya tried not to stare.

The game was chaos. Maya had never played padel in her life, but Brandon somehow made it look effortless. "Just hit it like tennis, but with more finesse," he whispered during a break, sweat dripping down his temple. "You're doing great."

A stray dog wandered onto the court during a crucial point—a scrawny thing with patchy fur and one ear that flopped down. Everyone froze.

"That's the Fox's dog," Kayla said, rolling her eyes. "Some senior who thinks he's so mysterious. Probably feeds it vitamins instead of actual food."

"The Fox?" Maya asked, forgetting her nerves for a second.

"Yeah, Liam. He's got this whole enigmatic artist vibe going on. Kind of a fox—sly and always up to something." Kayla waved her hand dismissively. "His dog, Rascal, keeps escaping."

The dog—Rascal—trotted over to Maya and nudged her ankle with its wet nose, then plopped down in front of her, almost like it was choosing her.

"Looks like he likes you," Brandon said, and Maya thought she saw him smile.

After the game (which Maya's team somehow won), they all sat on the bench, passing around a giant water bottle. Maya expected them to make fun of her terrible playing, but instead Kayla said, "You're actually pretty good. Same time next week?"

Brandon nodded. "Yeah, and hey—maybe we can check on Liam's dog after. I think he feeds it those organic vitamin supplements from his dad's store, but Rascal seems hungry for real food."

Maya looked down at the dog, who was now sleeping against her leg. For the first time in years, she didn't feel like the awkward girl trying too hard. She was just someone who played padel badly, who might have made some real friends, and who definitely needed to buy some proper gear before next week.

"Count me in," she said, and this time her hands weren't shaking at all.
