The Padel Court Incident

Maya stood at the edge of the pool party, clutching her phone like a lifeline. The summer air smelled like coconut sunscreen and chlorine, and everyone seemed to know exactly how to exist in this space — except her.

"Yo Maya! Get in here!" Jake called from the water, droplets streaming from his messy hair. He made it look effortless, this whole being-a-teenager thing.

Maya hesitated. Her swimming skills were practically nonexistent, something she'd successfully hidden until now. But before she could strategize an escape, Chloe appeared, wearing way too much highlighter.

"We're hitting the padel court," Chloe announced, like padel was somehow the coolest thing ever. "You down?"

Padel. Whatever that was. Maya nodded anyway because saying no felt impossible.

The court turned out to be this tennis-squash hybrid thing behind the clubhouse. Maya spent ten minutes missing every ball while Jake and Chloe's friend group watched, probably judging her awkward technique. Her ponytail kept escaping its elastic, and she could feel each strand of hair escaping like a traitor.

"You good?" Jake asked afterward, handing her a water bottle.

"Yeah, just out of shape," Maya muttered, wishing she could disappear.

Then came the cable incident. Someone's dog — a tiny white furball that was definitely not a cat — chased a ball straight into the overhead power cable. The whole court went dark. Chaos erupted. Everyone panicked except Maya, who just stood there breathing in the sudden quiet.

And somehow, in the darkness, Jake found her hand.

"Weird night, right?" he said, like being awkward together was totally fine.

Later, as everyone emerged from the shadows and the party continued with phone flashlights, Maya realized something: everyone was faking it. The confidence, the coolness — all of it. Even Jake.

She didn't go swimming that night. But she did let Jake teach her the proper padel grip, and for the first time all summer, she stopped wishing she was someone else.
