The Padel Court Decision

padelrunningfriend

Maya stood outside the new Padel Club, her heart doing that nervous flutter thing it always did when she was about to do something completely out of character. The gym bag slung over her shoulder contained a borrowed racquet and approximately zero confidence.

Inside, the familiar thwack of balls against glass walls echoed. There he was. Leo, her best friend since fourth grade, now wearing those stupidly expensive neon sneakers and high-fiving kids from the popular crowd. The same Leo who used to build blanket forts with her and promised they'd be weird together forever.

The Leo who now ghosted her texts for three weeks straight.

"Maya?" His eyes went wide when he spotted her. "You play?"

"About to," she lied, adjusting her borrowed wristband. "Saved me a court?"

He hesitated. His new friends were watching. That's when it hit her—she wasn't running toward her old friend anymore. She was running away from the truth that they'd already drifted apart.

"Actually," Maya said, her voice steadier than she felt, "I came to say something. I signed up for the beginner tournament next month. And I'm gonna crush it."

Leo's confused expression almost made her laugh. Almost.

"Why are you telling me this?"

"Because," Maya shrugged, "turns out I'm pretty awesome at padel. And you? You're just okay."

His friends snorted. Leo cracked a smile—the real one, not the performative cool-kid version.

"Show me what you got, then."

Twenty minutes later, sweating and grinning and absolutely terrible at the sport, Maya realized something else. She hadn't lost her best friend. She'd just outgrown the version of him that existed in her head. The real Leo was still there beneath the hype.

"You're atrocious at this," he said, tossing her a water bottle.

"But I'm having fun," she shot back. "Remember fun?"

"Vaguely." He grinned. "Same time tomorrow?"

"Bet."

Some friendships don't end—they just need a new game.
