The Padel Court Conspiracy

Maya pulled her beanie **hat** lower, hoping it would somehow make her invisible. Standing outside the community center, she watched as the popular kids gathered around the **padel** court like it was the social epicenter of the universe. How did hitting a ball around become the ultimate status symbol?

"You're not seriously thinking about joining, right?" Lena whispered, adjusting her sunglasses. "Unless you want to become their social experiment for the semester."

Maya's stomach did that familiar flip-flop thing. "My dad said I need to get out more. Said fresh air and exercise are like, basically a natural **vitamin** for mental health."

"Your dad also thinks TikTok is a type of pasta," Lena deadpanned.

Fair point.

Then she saw him—Jay, the guy she'd been low-key **spy**ing on through Instagram stories for months. He was laughing at something, hair messy in that effortless way that made Maya's brain short-circuit. Why did he have to be both cute AND nice? It was unfair, honestly.

"Maya!" Jay waved her over. "We need one more player. You down?"

Before she could process the absolute disaster that was about to unfold, her feet betrayed her and she said yes.

Her first swing? Missed the ball entirely. Second swing? Hit it directly into the fence. Third? Somehow managed to trip over her own feet and nearly faceplant.

"Smooth," someone muttered.

But then Jay was there, helping her up, not even laughing. "Everyone starts somewhere. My first game, I hit myself in the forehead with my own racket."

Maya snorted before she could stop herself. "You're making that up."

"Scouts' honor," he said, grinning. "Hey, you want to grab food after? There's that **cable** car cafe downtown. My treat—for the entertainment value alone."

Later, as they sat across from each other, Maya's racquet forgotten in the corner, she realized something: maybe embarrassing herself in front of half the school wasn't the catastrophe she'd imagined. Sometimes the most mortifying moments became the best stories.

"Next week?" Jay asked, tossing a padel ball between his hands. "I promise to let you win at least once."

"In your dreams, hotshot."

Maya smiled, finally pulling off her hat. Being visible wasn't so bad after all.
