The Padel Court Confidential
The rain had turned the padel court into a slick mirror when Elena arrived, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird. Marcus was already there, stretching his hamstrings with the practiced ease of a man who had nothing to hide. But Elena knew better. She'd spent the last three months playing the part of the devoted wife while secretly investigating him for corporate espionage. The irony wasn't lost on her—she was the spy in their marriage, and he was the spy for a rival pharmaceutical company.
"You're carrying tension in your shoulders," Marcus said, approaching her with that maddeningly gentle smile. "Bad day at the office?"
Elena forced a laugh. "Just the usual bear market bullshit. Our portfolio's tanking."
The bear and bull statues on his desk—tacky souvenirs from his Wall Street days—had always struck her as juvenile. Now they seemed like a warning she'd failed to heed.
They played in silence, the rhythmic thwack of the ball against the racket filling the space between them. Elena couldn't focus. Every time Marcus bent to retrieve a ball, she remembered the USB drive she'd found in his coat pocket, the encrypted files that could destroy her company. The water dripping from the court's glass walls reminded her of how she'd felt watching security footage of him passing documents to a competitor in a dimly lit bar.
"El, you're playing like shit," Marcus said, finally stopping the game. "What's really going on?"
Elena gripped her racket until her knuckles turned white. The moment was here—the confrontation she'd rehearsed a hundred times in front of her bathroom mirror. But instead of anger, she felt an overwhelming wave of exhaustion. How many lies could two people tell each other before there was nothing left?
"I know about the patents, Marcus. I know about Zurich."
His expression didn't change. He simply walked to the edge of the court, where the rain had created small puddles on the floor. "And I know about the PI you hired to follow me last month. And the keylogger on my laptop."
They stood there, soaked to the skin, surrounded by the quiet humiliation of it all.
"Why?" Elena asked, though she already knew the answer. Their marriage had become a bear market of emotions, and neither of them knew how to reinvest.
"Because loving you stopped being enough somewhere along the way," Marcus said quietly. "And because your father's company stole the formula that made my career possible in the first place."
Elena watched the water dripping from the ceiling, realizing that sometimes the person you sleep beside is the one you never truly see at all. The bull and bear had finally turned on each other, and there would be no winners on this court.
