The Padel Court Confession
Elena adjusted her wig in the rearview mirror, checking for stray hairs that might betray her. The platinum blonde was convincing enough—corporate espionage required as much attention to appearance as to intel. Her target: Marcus Thorne, CEO of the defense contractor whose government contracts she'd been hired to expose.
The padel club was his sanctuary, the one place where his guard dropped. She'd spent months cultivating their acquaintance, first at the bar, then as a regular opponent on the court. Today, everything would change.
"You're distracted," Marcus said, hitting the ball against the wall with practiced ease. Sweat gleamed on his temples, salt-and-pepper hair plastered to his forehead. "Usually you destroy me on the backhand."
Elena forced a laugh, swinging her racquet. "Just tired, Marcus. Long week."
"Weekend in Cabo would fix that," he said, his eyes holding something more than invitation. "I leave tomorrow. Join me?"
The question hung between them like the ball suspended in mid-air. This was it—the opening she'd engineered, the moment that would grant her access to his private files, his encrypted drives, everything her employer needed to destroy him.
Instead, she found herself pulling a loose strand from her wig. The blonde hair came away in her fingers, revealing the dark brown beneath.
"I'm a spy," she said, the truth tasting like ash. "Corporate. Your competitor hired me to—"
"I know," Marcus interrupted, dropping his racquet. "Why do you think I invited you?"
She stared at him, heart hammering against her ribs.
"My security team flagged you three months ago," he continued softly. "I let you stay because I was tired of the loneliness." He stepped closer. "So the question is: are you the spy anymore? Or just a woman I've fallen for on a padel court?"
Elena's hand trembled as she removed the wig completely, her dark hair tumbling free around her shoulders. She'd never broken protocol. Never compromised an operation.
Until now.
"I'll send your employer my resignation," she said. "And then I'll pack for Cabo."
