The Padel Court Confession
Max adjusted his lucky trucker hat for the thousandth time, sweat already pooling at the brim. This was it—the moment he'd been mentally rehearsing for three weeks. Playing padel with Chloe.
"You ready to get destroyed?" Chloe grinned, bouncing on the balls of her feet, her padel racket cutting through the humid summer air like she owned the court.
"Please," Max scoffed, trying to sound casual while his stomach did backflips. "I've been watching tutorials. I'm basically a pro now."
Chloe's dog, Barnaby—a chaotic golden retriever mix someone had tied to the fence—chose that exact moment to break free. He came tearing onto the court like a furry missile, grabbing their ball and sprinting toward the parking lot.
"BARNABY!" Chloe yelled, already running after him.
Max took off too, his lucky hat flying off as he sprinted. They chased the dog through the parking lot, past the confused group of seniors playing bocce, and finally cornered Barnaby near a dumpster where he'd dropped the ball to investigate a particularly interesting smell.
Breathing hard, Max leaned against the dumpster. His hat was gone. His dignity was gone. And he'd just sprinted full-speed across a public parking lot.
Chloe collapsed beside him, laughing so hard she was practically wheezing. "Oh my god. That was—"
"The most embarrassing thing that's ever happened to me," Max groaned, covering his face with both hands. "I'm never showing my face here again."
"No," Chloe said, suddenly serious. She reached out and gently pulled his hands away from his face. "It was perfect."
She looked at him with this expression he'd never seen before—something soft beneath all her usual confidence. "My ex would've yelled at the dog, then made me chase him alone. You just—you ran after him without even thinking. That's... kinda amazing."
Max stared at her. His heart, already racing from the unexpected sprint, kicked into overdrive.
"Also," Chloe added, her smirk returning, "you run like a duck. But like, a cute duck."
"I hate you," Max said, but he was grinning.
"You love me," she countered. "Now help me get this idiot back to the court. We've got a game to finish. And I'm still going to destroy you."
Max laughed, grabbed Barnaby's collar, and walked back toward the court hatless, heart pounding, feeling like maybe—just maybe—being himself was enough.
