The Padel Court Catastrophe
I'm standing at the padel court wearing my older sister's borrowed racket, feeling like a total fraud. The summer social everyone's been hyping on Insta, and here I am about to embarrass myself in front of the entire incoming sophomore class. My best friend Maya gave me the whole 'you got this' speech earlier, but my hands are literally shaking.
Mr. Harrison's ridiculous cat—this fluffy orange menace named Mango—keeps darting around the courts like he owns the place. Everyone's acting casual, but I can feel the judgment radiating off the popular crowd. Chloe and her squad are in their matching athleisure sets, looking like they walked out of a Pinterest board. Meanwhile, I'm over here spiraling about how much I'm about to humiliate myself.
'Serves up!' someone yells, and suddenly I'm in the game. The ball whizzes past me. Okay, cool, I can recover. Then it happens—my racket clips the edge, and I send the ball flying directly into the water fountain next to the court. Water explodes everywhere, drenching half the spectators.
Dead silence.
Then Chloe's perfect makeup-wearing friend starts laughing. Like, actually cracking up. 'That was legendary,' she says, and suddenly everyone's joining in. Even Mango the cat looks approving from his perch on the bench.
My face is burning but I'm laughing too, because what else can you do? Later, as I'm wringing out my shirt, three different people ask for my Insta. Turns out, absolutely nailing the most embarrassing serve of all time is better than being mediocre and forgettable.
Who knew that becoming the padel court disaster would finally make me visible?
