The Padel Court Betrayal

The padel ball hit the glass wall with a sharp crack, mirroring the crack in Elena's marriage. Across the court, Marcus laughed—a sound she'd once loved, now just data points in her assessment. She'd been hired to investigate him three months ago, a corporate spy tasked with uncovering whether he was selling trade secrets.

His iPhone lay face-up on the bench, screen lighting up with notifications she'd memorized as part of her surveillance. She knew his passwords, his habits, the women he texted late at night. What she hadn't expected was to fall in love with the target.

"You're wearing the hat," he said, pointing his racket toward her old Boston cap.

Elena touched the brim reflexively. "Funny what you hold onto."

"Funny," he agreed, but his eyes told her he knew.

The revelation had come last night. His phone had buzzed with an encrypted message—from her employer. Marcus wasn't the spy; she was. The real operation was using her to test a new corporate espionage protocol, with Marcus as the unwitting subject. His late-night texts? Dead drops. His supposed affairs? Meetings with handlers.

"Bear's ready to move," he said now, slicing a return shot down the line. "Or should I say, your handler?"

Elena missed the ball entirely. It bounced twice, mocking her. "You knew."

"Since week two." Marcus approached the net, sweat gleaming on his collarbone. "The question is, did you?"
