The Padel Court at Midnight

The fedora lay on the bench like a dead bird, its brim crushed where she'd gripped it too hard. Elena hadn't worn a hat since she was twenty, but something about this job demanded costume.

She'd spent three months as a corporate spy, stealing trade secrets from a rival tech firm. The job had demanded everything: her sleep, her conscience, and now apparently, her dignity. Her target, Julian, played padel at this exclusive club every Tuesday night. That's where she'd positioned herself—first as a casual player, then as his regular partner.

The game tonight had been brutal. Julian's forehand sliced through the humid air, each shot reminding her of the week she'd spent wiring his office with surveillance cameras. She'd watched him through hidden lenses for weeks, learning his routines, his coffee order, the way he frowned when he thought no one was looking.

"You're distracted," Julian had said during their second match, sweat dripping down his temples like he'd emerged from underwater. "Everything okay?"

Elena had almost told him then. Almost confessed that the beautiful woman he'd trusted was actually gathering evidence to destroy his company's merger.

Now she sat alone in the locker room, staring at the cable she'd taped under his desk. It would transmit his final meeting—the one where he'd inevitably discuss the merger details that her employers needed. After that, she'd disappear, leaving behind only the faint memory of a woman who played decent padel and wore ridiculous hats.

Her phone buzzed. One message from her handler: "We have enough. End it."

Elena stood up, placed the crushed fedora on her head, and walked toward the padel courts where Julian waited, unaware that their partnership—both on and off the court—had always been a lie.
