The Padel Court Affair

Elena had been running six miles a day since the divorce, her sneakers pounding the pavement at dawn while the city slept. It was the only time she didn't feel like she was being watched.

That changed when she met Marcus at the padel club. He moved with the easy confidence of a man who had nothing to hide—except, she would learn, everything. Their first date had been at that tapas place downtown, where he'd reached across the table to pick a piece of spinach from her lip, his thumb lingering on her mouth.

"You're messy," he'd smiled. "I like that."

Three months later, she found the encrypted folder on his laptop while he was in the shower. SPINACH PROJECT—operative files, surveillance photos, timeline of her movements. Her running routes. Her padel schedule. The dinner receipts.

She should have left. Instead, she stayed and became a spy in her own relationship, learning that Marcus worked for competitive intelligence firm Fox & Burke, hired by her ex-husband's company to dig up dirt on her pending lawsuit. The spinach in her teeth that night? He'd cataloged it as a behavioral marker: "Subject displays casual disregard for appearance—possible leverage point."

Now, at the padel club championship, Elena stood across the net from Marcus, his racket back, that familiar smile playing at his lips. He winked as he served.

She let the ball fly past her—game point. Walking off the court, she pulled the flash drive from her pocket, the one containing the Fox & Burke client list she'd stolen from his home office last night.

"You're messy," she whispered, pressing the drive into his palm. "But I'm not playing your game anymore."
