The Orange Zombie's Garden Secret

Lily loved adventures, especially the kind she found in her own backyard. One sunny afternoon, she was playing with her scruffy brown dog Barnaby when something strange caught her eye.

Behind the old oak tree, where shadows danced, something peculiar was happening. A creature with green-tinged skin and messy hair shambled slowly through the grass. It moved like a clockwork toy that needed winding.

"Barnaby, look!" Lily whispered. The little dog's tail stopped wagging. He gave a soft warning bark.

The creature heard them and turned around. Instead of scary eyes, it had the gentlest brown eyes Lily had ever seen. In its bumpy hand, it held a perfect bright orange.

"Don't be afraid," the zombie said in a voice that sounded like crunching autumn leaves. "I'm not scary. I'm just... forgotten."

Lily stepped closer, Barnaby right beside her. "What's your name?"

"I don't remember," the zombie said sadly. "But I know how to grow magic things." He pointed to the orange. "This one's special. Would you like to see?"

The zombie planted the orange in the soft earth. He sprinkled it with glittery dust from his pocket. Lily held her breath.

Suddenly, tiny orange sprouts shot up. They grew taller and taller until beautiful orange flowers bloomed. Then, miracle of miracles, little orange puppies began growing from the stems like fruit!

Barnaby couldn't believe his eyes. He bounded forward, tail wagging wildly, and the orange puppies yipped and tumbled around him.

"They need someone to love them," the zombie said. "Will you help?"

Lily's heart felt full. "Yes! But what about you? Will you stay forgotten?"

The zombie smiled. "I won't be forgotten anymore. I have new friends now. And friends never really forget each other."

That day, Lily learned that sometimes things that seem scary at first are actually just misunderstood. She also learned that kindness can grow magic friendships where you least expect them.

Every autumn, Lily and Barnaby visit their friend in the garden. They always bring the best gift of all — friendship and a basket of oranges, just in case the magic wants to bloom again.
