The Orange Who Was a Spy
Lily loved playing padel with her dad at the park. Every Saturday morning, they'd hit the bright blue ball back and forth across the net. Lily wasn't very good at it yet, but she loved the sound — *thwack, thwack, thwack* — like music.
One sunny day, something strange happened. Lily's dad hit the ball a little too hard, and it went bouncing toward the orange trees at the edge of the park. Lily ran after it, and that's when she saw him — a small orange sitting all alone on the grass, far from his tree.
"Hello," Lily whispered, picking up the orange. He felt warm, like he'd been sleeping in the sun.
"Hello," whispered a tiny voice back.
Lily almost dropped him! "You can talk?"
"I'm not just any orange," said the little fruit proudly. "I'm a spy!"
Lily giggled. "Oranges can't be spies!"
"This one can," said the orange. "I spy on things and tell secrets to the wind. Want to know what I learned today?"
Lily nodded, her eyes wide.
"I spied on a sad bluebird who lost her family in the storm. She's hiding in that big oak tree, too afraid to come out."
Lily's heart squeezed. She loved birds.
"Take me to her," said the orange. "I know a secret that might help."
Lily carried the spy orange carefully to the oak tree. There, huddled on a low branch, sat a small bluebird with feathers puffed up against the morning chill.
"Secret," the orange whispered in his squeaky voice. "The orange tree said her family flew to the garden by the library. They're waiting for her!"
The bluebird lifted her head. "Really?"
"Really," said Lily. "The orange spy told me."
The bluebird stretched her wings and chirped happily. She fluttered around Lily's head once — *thank you, thank you* — then soared toward the library garden.
"You're a good spy," Lily told the orange.
"I'm not done yet," the orange said mysteriously. "Want to know what else I spied? Your dad is waiting by the padel court with a surprise."
Lily ran back and found her dad holding two chocolate ice cream cones.
"For the best padel player I know," he said with a wink.
As they sat on the bench eating ice cream, Lily watched the trees and wondered what other secrets were hiding there, just waiting for the right spy to find them.
Sometimes, she thought, the best adventures come from the most unexpected friends — even ones that grow on trees.
