The Orange Who Was a Secret Spy
In the sunny orchard where peaches blushed and apples gleamed, one orange dreamed of bigger things than just being sweet.
Ollie the Orange was not ordinary. While other oranges hung quietly on their branches, Ollie practiced his spy skills. He learned to roll without making a sound. He practiced disguising himself as a ball when children came by. Most importantly, he was on a secret mission from the Friendship Fairy herself.
Beyond the orchard fence lived Barnaby, a young bull with the softest brown eyes and the loneliest heart in the whole valley. The other farm animals called him clumsy because his big hooves made the ground thump when he walked. Barnaby spent his days wishing for a friend who didn't mind a little thumping.
One warm afternoon, Ollie made his move. He waited for the farmer to leave the gate unlatched, then he rolled—bump, bump, bump—right down the hill, through the fence, and into Barnaby's pasture.
Barnaby's eyes widened. "What's this?" The bull lowered his massive head and sniffed. Ollie didn't roll away. Instead, he wiggled just a little, like he was saying hello.
"Hello, little orange," Barnaby whispered. "Would you like to be my friend?"
Ollie almost burst with happiness! This was exactly what the Friendship Fairy had sent him to find—not just a friend for Barnaby, but a friend who would look past appearances. Barnaby didn't care that Ollie was small and orange. Ollie didn't care that Barnaby was big and thumped.
That afternoon, the lonely bull and the secret spy orange played the best game of hide-and-seek ever invented. Ollie would hide in the grass, and Barnaby would find him by his citrusy scent. Then Barnaby would gently nudge Ollie with his soft nose, and Ollie would roll away giggling.
When the sun began to set, Ollie knew his mission was complete. He had found Barnaby a friend—and discovered something wonderful along the way.
"You're not just an orange," Barnaby said sleepily as Ollie prepared to return to his tree. "You're magic."
Ollie rolled back to the orchard that night, his orange heart full. He reported to the Friendship Fairy that mission accomplished—Barnaby now knew he was worthy of friendship, and Ollie had learned that the best spies are the ones who help hearts find each other.
And sometimes, if you visit that orchard, you might spot a very special orange rolling on an important mission, because friendship is always worth spying for.
