The Orange Who Wanted to Swim
Lila loved visiting the stream behind her house. Every afternoon, she'd sit on the mossy bank and dip her toes in the cool, rushing water. One day, something extraordinary happened.
An orange rolled out of the forest—a bright, round orange that looked just like any other, except this one could wiggle.
"Hello!" said the orange. "My name is Pip."
Lila rubbed her eyes. "You can talk?"
"Of course," Pip said proudly, rolling closer to the water's edge. "I'm not like other oranges. I have a dream."
"What dream?" Lila asked, leaning forward.
"I want to swim!" Pip declared. "All my orange friends are happy staying in the orchard, but I want to splash and dive and float."
Lila smiled. Being different was wonderful. "I can help you!"
She gently placed Pip in the shallow water. At first, Pip bobbed uncertainly. But soon, the little orange was twirling and spinning, creating tiny ripples that danced across the surface.
"I'm doing it!" Pip cheered. "I'm swimming!"
The water seemed to sparkle extra brightly around Pip. Fish gathered to watch the amazing swimming fruit. Even the dragonflies hovered nearby, their wings catching the sunlight.
That afternoon, Lila made her first real friend—someone who wasn't afraid to be different, to dream big dreams, and to splash joyfully into the unknown.
And every day after school, Lila returned to the stream. She and Pip would play for hours, splashing in the cool water under the warm sun. The other oranges in the orchard never understood Pip's dream, but Lila did.
Sometimes, the best friends come in the most surprising packages—even round, orange ones.
