The Orange Who Dreamed of Flying

orangespyrunning

In the sunniest corner of Farmer McGregor's orchard, Pip was the smallest orange on the tree. But Pip had a big secret – he could see things the other oranges couldn't.

Every afternoon, a little girl named Lily would come **running** through the orchard, her red hair streaming behind her like a sunset cloud. Pip loved watching her laugh as she chased butterflies and climbed trees. He wanted to be her friend, but he was just an orange, stuck on a branch.

One day, Pip noticed something strange. A mischievous fox had been sneaking into the orchard at night, stealing the juiciest fruits! The other oranges were too scared to do anything, but Pip knew he had to warn Lily.

"I'll be a **spy**!" Pip whispered to himself. Every night, he stayed extra bright, using his shiny peel to reflect moonlight. He watched and waited, keeping his little orange eyes wide open.

On the third night, he saw the fox creeping toward Lily's favorite tree. Pip knew he had to act! With all his might, he wiggled and wobbled until – PLIP! – he fell from his branch and rolled right to the fox's feet.

"What's this?" the fox grumbled, confused. The distraction gave Lily's dog, Buster, just enough time to bark loudly and scare the fox away forever!

The next morning, Lily found little Pip on the ground. She picked him up gently and smiled. "You're the bravest **orange** I've ever seen!" she said, putting him safely in her basket to take home.

From that day on, Pip lived in a bowl on Lily's windowsill. He may not have learned to fly, but he had something even better – he had a true friend, and the memory of how one small orange's courage saved the whole orchard.

Sometimes, Pip thought, the smallest heroes make the biggest difference.
