The Orange Water Spy
Lily loved to play spy. Every Saturday, she'd grab her magnifying glass and sneak around her backyard, searching for mysteries. But her biggest mystery was the old orange tree behind the fence.
Every Tuesday, Mrs. Higgins would toss three oranges into the creek nearby. Lily tried to spy on her from behind the bushes, but she could never see what happened next. The oranges would just… disappear.
"I'm going to solve this case," Lily whispered to her cat, Whiskers.
One Tuesday, Lily hid closer than ever. She watched Mrs. Higgins throw three bright oranges into the water. Splash! Splash! Splash!
But then something magical happened. The oranges didn't sink. Instead, they started to glow! The water around them turned golden and shimmering, like tiny stars were dancing underwater.
Lily gasped. She moved closer to the edge of the creek.
Suddenly, three little heads popped up from the water! They weren't fish at all – they were tiny creatures with orange skin, big eyes, and the biggest smiles Lily had ever seen.
"You came!" squeaked the smallest one. "Mrs. Higgins brings us oranges every week! They're our favorite treat!"
Lily couldn't believe her eyes. "You're… you're real!"
"We're water sprites," explained the biggest one, doing a happy flip in the air. "We live in the magical part of the creek. The oranges give us magic to keep the water clean and happy for all the creatures!"
The middle sprite swam over to Lily. "Would you like to see our home?"
Lily nodded, her heart pounding with excitement. The sprites splashed some glowing water onto her sneakers, and suddenly she could breathe underwater! Down they went, into a world of rainbow coral and singing fish.
"Lily, you're the first human to ever spy on us and stay to say hello," the smallest sprite said, handing her a perfect orange flower. "Will you be our friend?"
Lily beamed. "I would love that!"
Every Tuesday after that, Lily would help Mrs. Higgins throw oranges into the creek. But now she knew the truth – she wasn't just playing spy anymore. She was guarding a wonderful secret and making magical friends.
And sometimes, if you look closely at the creek on Tuesday afternoons, you might just see the water glow orange, and a little girl splashing happily with her new friends, the best friends a spy could ever find.
