The Orange Water Sprite
Lily was the slowest runner in her class. Every race day, she finished last. Today, she hid behind the old willow tree near Miller's Creek, watching her friends sprint across the playground through tear-filled eyes.
That's when she saw it—a tiny creature, no bigger than her thumb, glowing bright orange. It danced across the surface of the water, running in circles without sinking.
"Hello there," Lily whispered, leaning closer.
The creature stopped and looked up. It had shimmering wings and skin the color of a sunset. "I'm Pip, the water sprite!" it squeaked. "Why are you crying?"
Lily sniffed. "I'm terrible at running. Everyone laughs at me."
Pip did a somersault in the air. "That's not true! Watch this!" The sprite touched the water with one finger, and suddenly the creek began to glow orange. Ripples of golden light spread across the surface, forming a path.
"Step on it," Pip urged.
Lily hesitated, then placed one foot on the glowing water. It held her! She took another step, then another. She was walking on water!
"Now run!" Pip cheered.
Lily ran. The orange water sparkled beneath her feet like diamonds. She ran faster than she ever had before, the wind in her hair, the sprite zooming beside her. For the first time, she felt light, free, and powerful.
"You're not slow," Pip said as they finally stopped. "You just needed the right path. And guess what? You created it yourself."
Lily looked down. The water was normal again, but her feet still tingled with magic. "How?"
"Believing in yourself makes any path possible," Pip winked, then dissolved into a shower of orange sparkles that joined the flowing water.
The next day at school, Lily ran the fastest race of her life. She didn't win first place, but she won something better—she finished with a smile, knowing that somewhere, a tiny orange sprite was running on water, cheering her on.
From that day on, Lily visited Miller's Creek often. And sometimes, if she looked closely, she'd see orange ripples dancing on the water, reminding her that magic lives inside everyone who believes in themselves.
