The Orange-Water Bull

Lily loved visiting her grandmother's farm. Every summer, she'd help feed the chickens and collect eggs. But her favorite spot was the old watering hole behind the barn, where the most surprising friend lived.

His name was Barnaby, and he was a bull—not a scary bull like in storybooks, but the gentlest creature you could imagine. Barnaby had golden-brown fur and the kindest brown eyes. While other bulls might chase people away, Barnaby would let Lily pat his soft nose and scratch behind his ears.

"Why is he so nice?" Lily asked her grandmother one morning.

"Ah, that's a special story," Grandma said, peeling a ripe orange from the garden. "Come sit by the water with me."

They sat on the grassy bank where cool water trickled over smooth stones. Grandma handed Lily a slice of the orange. It was bright and sweet.

"Years ago, Barnaby was the grumpiest bull in the county," Grandma explained. "He'd chase anyone who came near his field. One hot summer day, a little boy named Timmy got lost and wandered onto Barnaby's land. Barnaby charged forward, ready to scare him away."

Lily's eyes went wide. "What happened?"

"Timmy was so scared he dropped his lunch—a whole bag of oranges. The sweet juice splashed everywhere, even into Barnaby's water trough. Something magical happened that day. When Barnaby drank the orange water, something changed in his heart. He realized the boy wasn't there to hurt him, but was just lost and scared. Instead of chasing Timmy, Barnaby led him all the way home."

Lily looked at Barnaby, who was resting in the shade. "That's why he's so gentle now?"

"Yes," Grandma smiled. "And every since then, I give him a slice of orange with his water. It reminds us both that kindness can change even the grumpiest heart."

Lily ran to Barnaby with the remaining orange slices. She dropped one into his water trough and watched it float like a tiny orange boat. Barnaby drank happily, then nudged Lily's shoulder with his wet nose.

From that day on, Lily learned something important: sometimes the scariest creatures just need a little kindness—and maybe something sweet—to show their true colors. And whenever she sees an orange or hears water flowing, she remembers her gentle friend Barnaby and the magic of kindness.
