The Orange That Swam Like Magic

Lily loved her golden retriever, Barnaby. He was the kind of dog who would chase butterflies until he collapsed with happiness. Every afternoon, they visited the beach together.

One Tuesday, something peculiar happened. Barnaby was sniffing near the rock pools when his tail started wagging so hard it became a blur. He pulled something from the seaweed – an orange, glowing like a tiny sun.

"Barnaby!" Lily cried. "Where did you find that?"

The orange pulsed in her hands, warm and alive. Then it did the impossible – it rolled toward the ocean and floated on the water's surface without sinking.

Barnaby barked joyfully and started swimming. The orange began moving too, gliding across the waves like it had a mind of its own. Lily couldn't believe her eyes. She kicked off her sandals and plunged into the crystal water.

"Come back!" she called, swimming after the magical fruit.

The orange led them around a bend in the coastline to a hidden cove Lily had never noticed before. There, washed up on the sand, was something strange – a small padel racket, painted with swirling patterns that matched the orange's glow.

Lily picked up the racket. The moment her fingers touched it, the orange zoomed toward her. She swung instinctively, and *whoosh* – the orange sailed through the air, leaving a trail of sparkles.

Barnaby barked and splashed, understanding immediately. This was a game!

For hours, they played their magical game of padel on the beach. The orange would dart and dance, sometimes hovering, sometimes skimming across the water while Barnaby swam beneath it, trying to catch the sparkles it left behind.

As the sun began to set, the orange glowed brighter, then floated over to Barnaby and gently tapped his nose. The golden retriever sneezed, and suddenly, he understood – this was a gift from the sea, a thank you for all the times he had played so gently along the shore.

Lily wrapped the magical orange in her towel. It had stopped glowing now, looking like an ordinary orange again. But when she peeled it later that evening, each segment tasted like sunshine and adventure.

"Same time tomorrow?" she whispered to Barnaby.

The dog's tail thumped against the floorboards – *yes, absolutely yes*.

And every day after that, whenever Barnaby went swimming, the orange would be waiting, ready for another game of magical padel with his very best friend.
