The Orange That Sparkled
Lily was the loneliest girl in town. Every afternoon, she sat by the babbling brook behind her house, tossing pebbles into the water and wishing for someone to play with.
One sunny day, something bright caught her eye. Rolling along the grassy bank was the most unusual orange she had ever seen. It shimmered like a tiny sunset, and when she picked it up, it felt warm in her hands — almost like it was alive!
"What are you?" Lily whispered.
Suddenly, the orange slipped from her fingers and splashed into the water. But instead of floating, it began to glow. The water bubbled and sparkled, and up popped a tiny creature with skin like moonlight and hair that flowed like a river current.
"Thank you for freeing me!" the creature said. "I'm Splash, a water sprite. That orange was my magical prison!"
Lily gasped. "You're magic? Really and truly magic?"
Splash did a somersault in the air. "Indeed! And now I can be your friend!"
All summer, Lily and Splash played by the brook. They raced leaf boats down the water and made sandcastles that the waves never knocked down. Splash told stories about mermaids who sang to the stars and fish that could grant wishes.
"But you must never tell anyone," Splash said seriously. "Grown-ups stop believing in magic, and that makes it fade away."
Lily promised. For the first time, she wasn't lonely anymore. She had a friend — a magical, wonderful friend!
When autumn came, Splash grew sad. "Water sprites must go underground when winter comes. The cold freezes our magic."
Lily's heart sank. "Will I ever see you again?"
"Every spring, when the first flower blooms, I'll return. Until then, keep this." Splash handed her the glowing orange, now small as a marble. "It will remind you that magic is real, and friendship never fades."
With a splash and a sparkle, Splash dove beneath the water and disappeared.
That winter, Lily kept the orange on her windowsill. On lonely days, she would touch it and remember: true friends can be found in the most unexpected places, if you keep your heart open to the magic around you.
And every spring, when the first crocus bloomed, Lily would run to the brook. Sure enough, a splash of moonlight would burst from the water, and her friend would return for another season of wonder.
For sometimes, the most extraordinary adventures begin with something as simple as an orange — and a heart brave enough to believe.
