The Orange That Ran Away

Lily loved her grandfather's old hat. It was purple and wide-brimmed, and when she wore it, she felt magical. One sunny afternoon, Lily sat in her backyard beneath the tall palm tree, peeling an orange for a snack.

Suddenly, the orange in her hand wiggled. Then it JUMPED right out of her palm!

"Hey!" Lily cried, but the orange was already running across the grass on tiny little legs that had appeared out of nowhere. Its peel had become a bright orange coat, and somehow it had grown a cheerful little face.

"Come back!" Lily called, chasing after the running fruit. The orange scampered around the palm tree, giggling.

"You can't catch me! I'm the fastest orange in the world!" it chirped.

Lily stopped running. "Why are you running away? I was going to eat you... nicely share you with my grandpa."

The orange stopped too. It looked at her with big eyes. "Nobody ever wanted to SHARE with me before. They always wanted to eat me all alone."

Lily's heart felt warm. "Well, you're special. You can run and talk! Maybe you shouldn't be eaten at all."

The orange smiled. "Really?"

"Really," said Lily, placing her purple hat on the ground. "You can live in my garden. I'll bring you friends."

And so Lily and Orange became best friends. Every day, she brought other fruits to visit, and they learned that the best magic isn't in running away — it's in friendship, kindness, and sharing what you have with others.

Sometimes, when grown-ups weren't looking, Orange would still run races with Lily around the palm tree, wearing her purple hat and making her laugh more than anything in the world.

And Lily learned that some of the best adventures come from the most unexpected places — even from a snack that decides to become a friend instead.
