The Orange That Glowed
Lily loved her grandmother's garden. It wasn't like other gardens. The tomatoes whispered hello when she walked by. The sunflowers turned their heads to watch her pass. But Lily's favorite spot was behind the old oak tree, where something magical grew.
One morning, she found Barnaby — her grandmother's scruffy brown dog — scratching at the dirt near the garden gate. His tail wagged so hard his whole body wiggled. Bark! Bark! He wanted her to follow.
"What is it, Barnaby?" Lily knelt to pet his soft ears.
Barnaby nudged her hand with his wet nose, then dashed toward the forbidden corner of the garden where Gran never let anyone go. The fence had a sign: ONLY FOR THE BRAVE.
Lily's heart thumped. But Barnaby looked back with such trusting eyes, she knew she could trust him too.
Together they slipped through a gap in the fence. What Lily saw made her gasp. In the center of a patch of ordinary green spinach grew a single orange tree. But not just any tree — its fruit glowed like tiny suns!
The spinach leaves around it shimmered silver. Lily reached for the lowest orange, and Barnaby gave a happy bark of approval.
As her fingers touched the bumpy skin, the orange pulsed with warmth. A voice whispered in her ear: "True friends find magic together."
Lily plucked the glowing fruit and shared it with Barnaby, splitting it into pieces. They ate under the tree, and suddenly — everything changed.
Lily could understand what the garden plants said. Barnaby could talk! And the spinach? Those shimmering leaves revealed the secret: they were enchanted guards, protecting the magic tree for someone kind enough to share.
"Thank you, Barnaby," Lily hugged her dog friend.
Barnaby licked her cheek. "Thank you, Lily. For trusting me."
From that day on, they shared every magical orange they found. And Lily learned: the best magic isn't in what you discover — it's in who you share it with.
Grandmother just smiled when she saw them coming back with orange-stained fingers. She knew all along.
