The Orange That Glow

Lila loved exploring her grandmother's garden. It was full of secrets, but nothing had ever prepared her for what she found that warm summer morning.

Behind the old oak tree, hidden beneath a tangle of vines, grew the most unusual orange Lila had ever seen. It didn't just hang there — it glowed with a soft, golden light, pulsing like a tiny heartbeat.

"Grandma never mentioned this," Lila whispered, reaching out. The moment her fingers brushed the orange, a warm tingle rushed up her arm. Suddenly, the garden around her dissolved into sparkling mist.

When the sparkles cleared, Lila gasped. She stood on a beach with sand the color of peach ice cream. The sky swirled with purple and pink clouds. In front of her rose an enormous palm tree, its trunk twisted like a corkscrew, leaves shimmering silver in the sunlight.

"Hello there," said a deep voice.

Lila jumped. Behind the palm tree stepped a bull — but not like any bull she'd seen in books. This one was the size of a large dog, with fur that sparkled like crushed sapphires and horns that curved into spirals of rainbows.

"Don't be scared," the bull said gently. "I'm Barnaby. I've been waiting for someone to find that orange for three hundred years."

"You can talk?" Lila breathed.

"Magical oranges unlock magical things," Barnaby winked. "Including my voice. Would you like to be my friend?"

Lila's heart swelled. She'd just moved to this town and hadn't made any friends yet. "I'd love that! But why were you waiting?"

"Only someone pure of heart can find the orange," Barnaby explained. "And only someone who needs a friend will pick it." He nudged her hand with his velvety nose. "This palm is special too. Each leaf grants one wish."

Lila thought carefully. She didn't wish for toys or adventures. "I wish that everyone who feels lonely could find a friend like you."

The palm tree trembled. One silver leaf drifted down and transformed into a hundreds of tiny orange lights that floated up into the sky, sailing away in all directions.

"Your wish is traveling to lonely hearts everywhere," Barnaby said. "And you, Lila, have given me the greatest gift of all — friendship."

As Lila hugged her new friend, she knew this was the best adventure of all. Some oranges don't just make juice — they make magic.
