The Orange That Dreamed of Water

Lila loved her backyard, especially the old palm tree that stood like a friendly giant with fuzzy brown trunk and green leaves waving hello. But the palm looked sad lately. Its leaves drooped, and the ground beneath was cracked and dry.

One afternoon, Lila found something strange nestled in the palm's rough bark—a tiny orange, glowing like a little sun. It hummed with magic.

"I'm thirsty," the orange whispered. "I dream of water."

Lila cupped the orange in her palm. It felt warm and alive, like a heartbeat. "I'll help you!" she promised.

She carried the orange to the edge of her yard where a small pond shimmered. The orange grew brighter. "Thank you!" it cheered. "But we need more water for my friend the palm."

Lila's eyes widened. "You can talk to the palm tree?"

"All living things can hear each other if you listen with your heart," the orange explained. "The palm has been my friend for years. It protected me from birds and gave me shade. Now it needs help."

Lila had an idea. She dipped her hands into the cool water and carried it, cup by cup, to the thirsty palm. The orange sat in her other palm, glowing brighter with every trip.

Suddenly, something magical happened. The orange rolled from Lila's hand and dissolved into golden sparkles that swirled around the palm tree. The sparkles turned into water droplets, raining gently on the palm's roots.

The ground began to gurgle. A small spring bubbled up from beneath the palm, and water flowed like a silver ribbon across the dry earth. New leaves unfurled, green and shiny.

"Thank you," the palm's voice rumbled like thunder. "You saved me."

Lila laughed as the spring grew into a little pond where fish appeared, swimming and splashing. Other children came to play, and the palm became the most popular tree in the neighborhood.

That night, Lila fell asleep holding a regular orange from her kitchen. She wondered if it, too, had dreams.

Sometimes the smallest things—like one small orange in one small palm—can make the biggest difference. All you need is a caring heart and a little bit of magic.
