The Orange That Dreamed
Lily's golden retriever Barnaby was the most curious dog in the world. Every morning, he'd trot around the garden, nose to the ground, searching for adventure.
One sunny afternoon, Barnaby discovered something strange behind the old oak tree. It was an orange—the brightest, most glowing orange Lily had ever seen.
"It's magical," Lily whispered, picking it up. The orange hummed in her hands like a tiny heartbeat.
Barnaby barked excitedly and dashed toward the woods. Lily followed, clutching the glowing orange. Through the trees they ran until they reached something impossible: a crystal pool that shimmered with rainbow colors.
"I've never seen this before," Lily breathed.
The orange pulsed brighter. Suddenly, it rolled from her palm and splash! into the pool it went.
Ripples of golden light spread across the water. The pool began to glow, and images floated above its surface—castles in clouds, fields of candy flowers, flying whales.
Barnaby whimpered with wonder. Lily reached out, and her fingers touched the water. Instantly, she understood. This was the Pool of Dreams, and the magic orange had opened its gateway.
"We can see any dream we imagine," Lily realized. She closed her eyes and pictured her grandmother, who lived far away. The pool showed her Grandma laughing in her garden, planting roses.
Barnaby barked, and the water changed to show him chasing endless butterflies across endless meadows.
They spent hours dreaming together—Lily seeing herself becoming an astronaut, Barnaby seeing himself with a never-ending supply of treats. Finally, the orange floated back to the surface, its glow fading to ordinary.
Lily pulled it out. Now it was just a regular orange, but she knew better.
"Thank you," she whispered to the pool.
As they walked home, Lily peeled the orange and shared every slice with Barnaby. It was the sweetest thing she'd ever tasted—not because of magic, but because it reminded her of the most important truth: the best adventures are the ones you share with your best friend.
And sometimes, the most ordinary things can lead to the most extraordinary dreams.
