The Orange That Could Swim
Lily had the most wild and curly hair in all of Willow Creek. It bounced like springs when she walked, and puffed out like a golden cloud whenever she laughed. But Lily didn't like her hair. She wanted straight, smooth hair like her friends.
One hot afternoon, Lily sat by the edge of Bluebell Pond, dangling her feet in the cool water. She felt lonely watching the other children swimming and laughing together. Suddenly, something bright caught her eye.
Floating near a lily pad was the most beautiful orange she had ever seen. It shimmered like a tiny sun, glowing softly in the dappled light. But this was no ordinary fruit—when Lily reached for it, the orange didn't float away. It swam right to her hand!
"Hello, Lily," said the orange in a voice like bubbling brooks. "I'm Clementine. I've been waiting for someone with such magnificent hair."
Lily gasped. "You can talk? And you can swim?"
"Magical oranges can do many things," Clementine bubbled. "Come swimming with me, and I'll show you something wonderful."
Hesitantly, Lily waded into the pond. To her surprise, she didn't sink. Clementine circled around her, creating a magical glow that made the water feel like soft air. Lily began to swim, gliding through the water as easily as a fish.
All afternoon, they played together. Lily swam deeper and faster than she ever had before. Other children gathered by the shore, amazed to see a girl swimming alongside a glowing orange.
When it was time to leave, Clementine spoke once more. "Your hair is perfect, Lily. It's wild and free, just like the water. Never wish to be something you're not."
Lily touched her damp curls and smiled. She had made an extraordinary friend and learned to love herself just as she was.
From that day on, Lily wore her hair with pride, and whenever she visited Bluebell Pond, she could still see a tiny orange glow beneath the waves—her friend Clementine, swimming happily in their magical world together.
