The Orange Sunset Protocol

The orange glow of sunset bled across the conference room table, casting long shadows that seemed to stretch toward the empty seats where her colleagues had sat just hours earlier. Mara's fingers traced the condensation on her water glass as she replayed the moment when the iphone had lit up with the notification that changed everything.

"They're calling it 'strategic realignment,'" Daniel had said, his voice smooth and practiced, like a bull negotiating through a china shop. "But we both know what this really is."

She'd wanted to believe him. Wanted to believe that the twenty-room corporate merger meant something more than just numbers on a spreadsheet. But the notification on his iphone—his assistant's message about the "finalized termination list"—had revealed the truth: Daniel had been the fox in the hen house all along, charming and ruthless in equal measure.

Now, as the cleaning crew moved through the corridors outside, Mara thought about how she'd fallen for it. The way he'd looked at her across strategy meetings. The late nights they'd spent "working," which she'd mistaken for something genuine. The way he'd made her feel like a partner rather than a pawn.

The orange light faded to gray, and with it went the last of her naivety. She stood, gathered her things, and caught her reflection in the floor-to-ceiling window. The woman staring back looked older than she had this morning—harder around the edges, but clearer somehow.

Her phone buzzed. A message from Daniel: "Can we talk?"

Mara considered the fox's invitation, then deleted it without responding. Let him think he'd won. For now. Tomorrow she'd start planning her own move, somewhere far from this glass tower and its beautiful, treacherous views. Tomorrow she'd stop being the prey.

The elevator doors opened, and she stepped inside, alone, ready to finally play the game she'd been watching from the sidelines for far too long.
